Patrick Pynes

Patrick PynesPatrick Pynes was a late bloomer in the world of gardening and beekeeping. In the summer of 1987, before beginning work on a doctorate in English Literature at the University of Tennessee, he took a part-time job working on a pick-your-own strawberry farm. Following that surprisingly pleasurable experience, and a related encounter with Selu*, he dropped out of graduate school and began working as an organic gardener and beekeeper.

A few years later Patrick returned to academia and completed a Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of New Mexico, focusing upon the effects of industrial timber harvesting in the Navajo Nation's ponderosa pine forests. Since 1989 he has been keeping bees and growing ornamental and edible gardens in high desert places such as Albuquerque, Winslow and Flagstaff.

Besides raising three brilliant daughters and taking care of four Kenya top bar beehives in his backyard, his major labor of love for the past several years has been The Gardens at La Posada Hotel in Winslow where he has been Gardens Manager since December 2000.
