Dr. Larry Stevens, Ecologist and MNA Curator
Although Dr. Larry Stevens was recently appointed curator of ecology and conservation at MNA, he is not new to the Museum. He began his career in biology under Dr. Steve Carothers in 1970 as a Prescott College undergraduate and then went on to study Glen Canyon Dam effects on the Colorado River. After receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. at Northern Arizona University, he became the ecologist for Grand Canyon National Park and later for the Bureau of Reclamation. Stevens joined the Grand Canyon Wildlands Council as senior scientist in 1999 to pursue conservation ecology. He also ran an ecological consulting firm.
A long-time Colorado River guide, Stevens has logged more than 350 commercial and science trips through Grand Canyon. He writes extensively on the natural and human history of the region for both popular science and academic publications. He lives with his daughter in Flagstaff, where he enjoys hiking and playing guitar.
